The first building was finished in 1908 was the Victorian Room. (formally the Goverment Hostel at Waitamo). It consisted of 6 guest rooms,a reception, kitchen and staff room. By the 1920's the hostel was to small for the growing amount of visitors, so the Art Deco Wing was built with a further 24 bedrooms a kitchen and dining room. In 1954 a alcool licence was granted and the hostel became an hotel. From 1955 i became part of the Goverment owned hotel chain the Tourist Hotel Coporation. Then from 1990 - 1996 a family trust owned the hotel who reclaimed the land back from the goverment. They then sold it to Tourist Holding Limited. 1997up until 2002 it was leased by many different people, till the Landmarks Hotel Chain took over.

The hotel as a reputation of being haunted some of the things that have been reported are the dining room suddenly going cold, the sound of maids trollies through the corridor and people having the feeling that someone as walked past or through them.
