The hotel was built during the 1880s; the grand opening was in 1889, celebrated by many distinguished guests. One of the most popular facilities the hotel offered was ‘saltwater baths’, the water was gathered from the Passamaquoddy Bay. Guests would submerge themselves in this water as they believed it to have therapeutic qualities. The hotel was first established by the St Andrew Land Company in 1883. The next owners were the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1903. They sold it to local residents in 1970 who leased it to The Province of New Brunswick in 1973; they brought the hotel in 1984 and still have ownership today. The hotel is known to be home for several ghosts including a bride who is heard crying in room 473, the most popular haunting is of a polite bellman in the winter who greats guests at the elevator, also things are moved around, doorknobs are seen moving and the sink taps have been known to turn on by themselves.
