The terrace used to consist of 7, three storey homes and was constructed in 2 stages. 3 were built for grain merchant George Nipper in 1878 and 4 were built for bookmaker Joseph Thompson in 1888. There were/are the finest terraces in Melbourne. One of the houses was demolished in 1940 and the rear wings in 1972, before they became protected by the State Government legalization. They are now the headquarters for the Australian National Trust.
The terraces are known to be haunted with strange sounds being heard and apparitions being seen including one of a buxom woman.
