The formation of this mountain range happened over 12 million years ago, and plant life began to form around 6000 years ago. The first predominant humans in the area were the Hohokam people.  An earthquake in 1887 dislodged many boulders which came to rest in the valley below. The forest service was first created in 1905 overseeing the canyon. The bridge over the creek and dam were constructed during the Great Depression, by the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corporation. In 1978 trams started to operate at the canyon. Access by cars was restricted in the area to allow visitors to reach the higher points. Sabino Canyon Tours were established in 1985.
