The lock is a boat lift on the Otonabee River, and is on a Trent Severn Waterway. They are the highest hydraulic boat lifts in the world rising to 65 feet.

The Locks were designed by Richard Birdsall Rogers who was a superindentant of The Trent Canal. The construction was approved in 1896 and the concrete works were done by Corry and Laverdure and the metal work was done by Dominion Bridge. The work was completed in 1904 and still remain in use today.

The locks have been a place that as witnessed many tradgedies including accidents and suicides, and there a few ghosts that are siad to still roam around the area.
