In Babylonia and Ancient Greece they were used symbolically. It as associations with magic and the occult. Christians once used the symbol to represent the five wounds of Jesus, and was seen to protect against demons. It is associated with the planet Venus and the worship of the goddess of Venus. The first known use of the pentagram was in writings from the Mesopotamian writings which date from around 3000 BC.
By the 19th century a distinction had developed among occultists about the pentagram, with a single point upwards it depicted a spirit watching over the 4 elements, earth, fire, water and air and was essentially of good meaning. If it was drawn with 2 points up, it was considered evil. Satanists use the pentagram with the 2 points up, often with a goat (representing the devil) drawn inside.
