merchants house new yorkThe house was built in 1832 and had the most up to date technology for that era.  For 100 years it was home to the Tredwells who were a wealthy merchant family. Also at the house there was 4 live in servants who were on call day and night for all the family’s needs. The last descendent to live at the house was Gertrude Tredwell , she died in 1933 in one of the bedrooms. The house was then opened to the public in 1936 and continues to this day as a museum with original furniture, clothing and other memorabilia.  The house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1965, in 1981 it was designated as a New York Interior landmark and it is also placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is thought to be haunted, at least 9 people have died there and it some of these that are still wandering around, one that is regularly seen is a petite women who walks through the kitchen.  Also it is told that when the name Tredwell is typed on the computer it has a habit of freezing.
