The cave is the largest cave system in the world consisting of five levels and 330 miles of passageways, carved out of the limestone cave by the water. It as been a tourist attraction for over 100 years. Before it was explored by modern man in the 1790’s it was inhabited by Native Americans. During the war of 1812 it was mined for nitrate for the use of gun powder. Mammoth Cave became a National Park in July 1941 and a World Heritage site in October 1981.

Many people have reported seeing ghosts in the cave the most popular being of a black man, thought to be Stephen Bishop a slave who gave tours in 1883, he was once offered his freedom, but he loved the caves so much he did not leave, and it seems he still remains to this day, and a spirit named Melissa after being rejected by someone she fell for, she led them into the cave and abandoned him, it was only meant as a prank, when she returned she could not find him, he had vanished never to be seen again, she is said to have returned to continue her search for him, others are a formally dressed man, a voice of a woman and footprints that appear on muddy tracks.
