Little Bighorn BattlefieldThe battle happened on the plains of the Bighorn Valley and alongside of the Bighorn River during the 25th and 26th June 1876. General Custer and his men from the 7th cavalry United States Army were brutally and totally defeated by the Cheyenne and Sioux Warriors who were under the orders of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. The army was sent to attack the Indians after a report by E.C.  Watkins claimed they were hostile to the the United States.

Thousands of Indians had gone out of their reservations and the army were issued to force them back. It was a three part attack each group were lead by George Crook, John Gibbon or Alfred Terry his group included Custer and his men. Crooks group got defeated early on the 17th June and were forced to retreat, Gibbons and Terry’s continued. The plan was to send Custer and his men near Rosebud River while the rest of terrys and gibbond grour went along big horn river, this was in hope that they would trap the Indians between them. Custers force arrived on 24th June, and the other group was still marching. The groups were deployed at different times so they could provide reinforcement, and go to fight at different times, the outcome was that many people died and got injured, but General Custer and his group of men were totally annihilated.

sitting bullWhen people went back to the battlefield most of the Indians who had been injured or killed had been removed, the US army buried their dead were they fell at the battleground, it was first preserved as a National Cemetery in 1879 to protect the graves of the dead. It was renamed Custer Battlefield National Monument in 1946 and again in 1991 as Little Bighorn National Monument.

There are now 10 monuments that stand 8 in varying places to remember where American soldiers fell and two red markers to show where Indian Warriors fell.
