The house was built over 3 centuries, beginning in 1650 when James Leith built the first tower. It was always the home of the Leith – Hay family being passed from father to son until the middle of the 20th century. The family had strong military connections and the hall was a stronghold during the Jacobite Rebellion 1745 – 1746, and during the Great War it was used as a army hospital. Unfortunately the last 2 lairds died within months of each other and Leith hall was left in the care of Henrietta Leith - Hays who passed it on with all of it contents to the National Trust. of Scotland.
The hall is said to be home to many ghost, the most popular one is said to be that of John Leigh who was killed during a pub brawl. He was shot and died 3 days later at Leigh Hall. Some other things that have been reported are a spirit by the stairwell, in one of the bedrooms children have been seen or their laughter has been heard, and Henrietta as been seen roaming the corridors.
