Kansas Aviation MuseumWhen the land was bought by the city in 1927, the airport site was to be known as Wichita California Section. Ground was first broken in 1930 by the city Manager L W Clapp. Due to financial difficulties work at to stop and things were left unfinished, but by 1934 through the New Deal and Works Progress Administration workers and money was once again available, the work was completed in 1935, a upper control tower was added in 1941. It was at it’s busiest during the 40’s and at one point a plane would either take off or land every 90 seconds. Many well known people also used the airport including Amelia Earhart.  The airport was also extended during the 1940’s. After World War II it was decided that the airport needed relocating. In 1951 it was announced that USAF would take over the airport for pilot training, and all non military were to stop using the airport as soon as possible. By 1954 all non military traffic was moved to midcontinent airport which had been newly built.  The USAF used the airport for the next 30 years until it was closed down.  The property was acquired by the City of Wichita and was leased to The Wichita Aeronautical Historical Association who used it as a museum about Kansas Aviation History, which opened in 1991. The museum is said to have many different kind of phenomenon happen, including  the sightings of ghosts, doors slamming even though there is none in that building, the sound of music playing and the sound of groups of people gathering as if they are about to board a plane.
