This was the site of the largest battle fought during the American Civil War on the first 3 days of July 1863. It was a hallmark victory for the Army of Potomac and ended the invasion of the North by the Army of North Virginia. The battle resulted in over 51,000 soldiers being killed, wounded, captured or missing.
 
The Soldiers National Cemetery was dedicated in November 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln made is immortal Gettysburg address. In February 1895 a congressional legalisation was signed to establish the national park as a memorial to the armies who fought in this great battle.
 
Not surprisingly considering what went on here and all the blood that was shed, that there are many ghosts, many soldiers have been seen wandering around, orbs have been noticed, cold spots felt and objects have been known to move by themselves.
