The castle has five towers which are associated with each of the castles five succesive owners, Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gorden and Forbes - Leith. Then in 1982 Andrew Forbes - Leith sold the castle to The National Trust of Scotland and it became and still is a visitor attraction.

Ghosts that are said to be at the castle are, the green lady, thought to be Lilias Drummond she died at the castle, it is thought her husband starved her to death because she did not give him a male heir but her murder in still surrounded in mystery, a spirit seen wandering around the library, the cries of a baby are heard, and in the Gordon bedroom there is sometimes a smell of roses.
