Forepaughs Restaurant PDF Print E-mail

Forepaughs RestaurantIn 1870 Joseph lybrandt Forepaugh who had made his fortune in the dry goods business, brought 5 plots of land and built his Victorian mansion in the centre of it, the remaining land was turned into beautiful landscaped gardens. He lived there with his wife Mary and 2 children. They lived a life of finery and hired servants. Joseph was having an affair with a maid Molly, he wife found out by finding them in bed together. She asked her husband to finish the affair, which he did. Molly found out she was pregnant and committed suicide by tying a rope to the chandelier and throwing herself out of the window. To try and forget about what happened and to re-establish his marriage, in 1866 he sold his mansion to General John Henry

Hammond and with his family moved to Europe. In 1889 they moved back to America building another mansion which overlooked their first home and the city. In 1892 Joseph had sunk into deep depression, though he said it was due to worries about his business which was doing fine, it is thought he was still mourning the death of Molly. He committed suicide by shooting himself. Up until 1983 many people have owned the mansion. The present owners have now turned it into a French Restaurant.

Joseph and Molly both haunt the restaurant and Molly in particular likes to make herself known. In the basement lights switch on and off by themselves, cold spots are felt and strange noises are heard. Maybe Joseph and Molly have been reunited and can now finally be together.
