The land the quarry is on was indentified as potential economic resource in 1898 by Chase S Osbourne who was a editor, writer and politician, and along with the general manager of the South Shore Atlantic Railway William F Finch broght the land and opened the quarry in 1905, they named it Fiborn as it was a mixture of their names. The quarry existed for buisness between 1905 until late 1935. They sold it to Algoma Steel in 1906. The majority of the workers and their families lived in a isolated community, which had the quarry plant, shop, grade school, a boarding house and a shop. Pure limestone was mined at the quarry and was removed by railway to Canadian Soo, to be used as flux in the stell works. When the quarry closed in 1935 the owners required everyone except one family to maintain the site to move away, making the site a ghost town. They owned the site until 1987 when the land was purchased by Michigan Karst Conservancy, they wanted to protect the area for all its natural features included plants and animals.
