Edinburgh Vaults

The Edinburgh's South Bridge was built between 1785 and 1788, and with this a series of vaults were built under the bridge, these were used by local business men for storage and workshops. They were also used for accommodation for the poor people. With up to ten people in a small dark space. And it was not long before it became a place for rogues, prostitutes, villains and even murderers.

However the vaults were not opened for very long as they soon became overcrowded and with no sunlight, proper ventilation or any where to put rubbish and toilet waste, they soon became dirt and disease ridden. They were closed in 1815. These vaults then stayed undiscovered until the mid 1980's, when they became the tourist attraction we know of today.

With many reported ghost sighting and strange goings on and it is said that this was the place Burke and Hare (the notorious body snatchers) acquired some of there dead bodies from which they sold to the nearby teaching hospital. A young boy is known to tug at peoples legs or sleeves, and a ghost known as Mr . Boots who is rather unpleasant pushes peoples and can whisper obscenities in their ears.
