The castle was founded in 1071 in a norman style and over the years would go through many changes. It was rebuilt as a Renaissance Palace by John Dudley in 1530, he was later beheaded by Queen Mary for taking part in the plot to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne. During the Civil War it was a royalist strong hold, it was surendered in 1646 after the defeat of Charles I. It was used as the home of the Earls of Dudley until 1750 when it was gutted by fire. Even though they moved to Himley Hall, the site was still theirs and is where their descendants founded the zoo. Within the castle walls. The castle is now in a ruinous state.
The zoo was founded in 1935 and as 12 grade 2 listed buildings some of which were built in 1937 by Berthold Lubetkins Tecton Firm.
There are said to be a few ghosts that wander around the ruined castle and zoo including a drummer boy, monks and a grey lady also unexplained footsteps are heard and some parts have a very unpleasant atmosphere
