The hall was built in the late 19th century as a hospital; it remained that way until the 1920s when it became a centre for mental illnesses and criminal behavior studies and was renamed The Crowley Home for the Criminally Insane. Dr Bernard Leys and his wife Beatrice ran the centre and Bernard was also the head practitioner. In the 1930’s Bernard died in what remains as unknown circumstances during an examination on one of his deranged patients. Some claim he was stabbed whilst carrying out an operation on a patient whom he had not anesthetized properly. But official records say it was due to an heart attack. With no one being found to take over from him the centre was closed. The patients were either sent else where or freed. The hall remained empty for nearly two decades and no one would go inside the building due to reports of strange noises coming from within the building. In 1970 it became Crowley Children’s Hospital after it had been renovated to make it suitable. The hospital was closed in 1997 due to new premises being built nearby. It again stood empty until 2005 when a property developer brought it, intending to renovate the building and turn it into housing.Whilst Crowley was a children’s hospital there were many paranormal reports of strange noises, figures being seen and staff and children being attacked. The incidents did cease for awhile but resumed after workmen discovered bones behind a wall, said to belong to at least 4 people including that of a small child. These reports include loud screaming and apparitions roaming the corridors. They stopped all work after workmen were reporting seeing tools being thrown and that they were being touched and they refused to continue. The owner is trying to find the cause of the problem so that work can continue and be finished.
