The priory was founded by the Beauchamp family in 1147-53, it was the only English Monastic order called The Gilbertines. It was originally two cloisters one for the nuns and the other the canons and a church, one cloister and the church was destroyed after 1538. Chicksands is one of the most substantial remains today of a monastic order. The Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538 and was sold by him in 1540 to Richard Snow a London grocer, his son Daniel leased it and in 1576 he bequeathed to the Osbourne family. And it remained in their family until 1932, when it became crown property. During World War 2 it became RAF Chicksand and between 1950 and 1995 it was used by USAF. Between 1997 and 1998 the MOD restored the Priory. Today it is a tri service establishment which trains military and civilian personnel in intelligence skills.
The ghosts that have been seen at Chicksand are nuns, monks and horsemen. One nun was rumoured to have been pregnant (this was not allowed) it is said she was kept locked up in her room up until her death, and she is one of the nuns who haunts there.
