Caractacus Stone Exmoor - Standing Stone |
The standing stone is thought to date from the fifth century and as an inscription inscribed in it in Latin. The tale that goes with it is that a local carter was looking for buried treasure under it when the stone fell on him and crushed him to death. A shelter was built over the stone in 1906 to try and add some protection to it.
On dark misty nights the ghost of the carter is said to return still trying to get the supposed treasure.
