Plans suggest that a pit had existed on this site since the 1700's. Before 1827 the colliery was owned by the Milnes family, then ownership passed to the Lister Kaye family up until 1917. After this the pit was run by a company which included Percy Greaves. Arthur Sykes of Lockwood and Elliot brought the colliiery around 1941. He remained the owner until Nationalisation in 1947. The conversion to a museum began in 1985 when the coal had become exhausted. The Yorkshire Mining Museum opened in 1988. The mining shaft is still in use today and is believed to be the oldest one still working. Life at the mines were not easy and working conditions were hard. Child labour was common place, and there were lots of industrial accidents. Death, disease and hardship were also rife.
