Bytown was founding by Lt Colonel John By and the structure was built in 1827. The building was used for the treasury and storage during the building of the Rideau Canal. Bytown was known as a rowdy and violent place thanks to the lumberjacks who worked their helping the town to develop. Bytown then evolved into Ottawa its character changed and became a much nicer place to be. The stone building the oldest in Ottawa is now a museum which was opened in 1917. The need for a museum was apparent due to that the Women’s Canadian Historical Society of Ottawa (WCHSO) had amassed so many artefacts relating to the history of the town. The museum was moved to this present building in 1951. The WCHSO admitted men for the first time in 1956 and changed its name to Historical Society of Ottawa (HSO). The museum is run independently by them.
