bosworth hallThe land and previous building were always owned by the Dixie family. The current hall was built by Sir Beaumont Dixie after he had inherited the land during the reign of William and Mary in 1682. The Dixie families were forced to sell in the late 19th century after their wealth was lost to gambling debts. It was bought by Charles Tollemache Scott in 1885 and he made many improvements and changes. One change he made was replacing the cellar doors with gates which were from Newgate Prison. Scott’s daughter Wenefryde sold the estate in 1913, it passed on to two more different owners before Leicestershire City Council bought it in 1931. It was turned into a hospital and remained this way until the 1980’s. It was sold to a construction firm who wanted to turn it into a hotel but they could not manage it and they went bankrupt. It was eventually and successfully turned into a hotel after the Britannia Hotel Chain purchased it. The hall is said to be haunted by a grey lady, believed to be Ann who lived there with her father in the earlier building. She was in love with the gardener and it was not approved by her father, traps were set to get the gardener but it was Ann who was caught by them and suffered terrible injuries to her legs and died a few days later.
