There as been a house on this site since the 1200's and it was originally a priory and then home to the leighs , then for 300 years from the 16th century it was home to the Worsley family. The existing building was constructed in the 18th century. In 1781 the wife of Sir Richard Worsley, Seymour Dorothy Fleming caused a scandal by having an high class affair, she later admitted to havinh had 27 lovers. It became a school called Dr Pounds Acadamy for Young Gentlemen in 1867. From 1909 it was left empty except for being in use during both world wars. It was badly damaged by German Bombs in 1943. It is now managed by English Heritage and is open to the public.
Some of the spirits that have been seen here a beautiful women, a presence in the gatehouse and shadowy figures on the wall also strange noises have been heard, people have the sense that someone is watching them and temperature changes.
