The Alexandra Theatre is in Derek Acorah's book 'Haunted Britain' and is the 13th haunted place in the Midlands. Two ghosts continuously attempt to up stage each other at the this theatre, which dates back to the Edwardian era. Sometimes the ghostly footsteps of Leon Salberg- manager in the 1930's can be heard echoing in one of the offices. (my office!) The Theatre was opened on 27th May 1901 (brainchild of William Coutts). The original theatre was called the Lyceum and most the funding came from the brewers Michells and Butler. The theatre from the it;s earliest days was dubbed 'The people's Popular Theatre' i.e. the tickets were relatively cheap and unlike theatre audiences today the audience was overwhelmingly working class. The Lyceum went under the hammer in 1902. The only bid came from a Bristolian called Edward Henry Parker, professional name Lester Collingwood. He was an experienced theatre man, the pioneer of touring patomime and a largerthan life character. The theatre was renamed The Alexandra and re-opened on December 22nd 1902 (after a refurb). Collingwood died on September 19th 1910. He crashed his car into a milk float and was instantly killed. Towards the end of 1911 the Theatre was purchased by Julius and Joshua Thomas and their brother-in-law Leon Salberg Leon Salsberg died in his office at the Alexandra Theatre on September 29th 1937. His ghost is said to haunt the Alexandra to this day.
